柯伟林（W.C.Kirby），1981年获哈佛大学博士学位。曾任哈佛大学历史系主任、文理学院院长、哈佛大学盖辛葛尔历史教授、费正清东亚研究中心主任，是美国艺术及科学学院院士。1984年出版本书，备受好评；此后又发表了数篇有影响的论文，成为美国研究中国近代史的主要学者之一。其论文《近代中国的连续与变化》，论述了民国的经济计划和人才对日后大陆和台湾经济发展的作用，指出中国近代史研究不能以1949年作为界线；另一论文《中国的国际化》，展示了近代中国将国际上政治、经济、军事和文化模式本土化的努力，指出了对中国近代史的认识不能仅仅“以中国为中心”。这些论述极具影响，使得“连续与变化”和“国际化”成为西方中青年学者研读中国近代史的新视角。

贝思飞（Phil Billingsley），1945年6月出生于英国伦敦，1974年获英国里兹大学博士学位。1972-1973年间在伦敦大学现代中国研究所从事研究。现任日本大阪桃山学院大学教养学部教授。编著有《我和土匪在一起的日子——民国匪案洋人亲历记》等。
